Why is merging properly so hard??

Most of my Bad Drivers of SE Wisconsin dashcam video this week comprises of asshats not signalling, or merging too slow to match the speed of traffic, and one dipshit that couldn't decide to let ME merge or nah.

I don't understand why people always seem surprised at the speed of the highway when merging. It seems like half of the people just idle up the on-ramp at 40 mph, and then gun it at the last minute to pull out into traffic still going 20 under. If they got up to speed in the on-ramp (you know - why it's an on-ramp instead of a stop sign with a right turn) the usual clusterfuck that is nearly every entrance would disappear.

i don;t use a signal to merge onto the highway. i feel like its the same as needing a directional when your in the left turn only lane. Its pretty obvious you want to merge. I do when I'm exiting tho, cuz u need to slow down and should let people know thats happening.

Driver's Ed 101: Always broadcast your intentions. I agree that it may seem superfluous when there's really nowhere else for you to go, but always signalling every move you make is a good habit to get into.

Yes, but it helps the other drivers to know that you are doing it NOW. They may not be paying attention.

most people have been trained and are afraid of accelerating while turning. They wait till the on ramp straightens out because it feels safer, even tho they are actually causing a bigger problem ans pissing off the people around them.

There is a reasons turn signals flash tho. People aren't paying attention, and get tunnel vision on the highway. A blinking light in their peripheral vision has a better chance of getting there attention so they don't hit you.

I believe it has to do with the Prius drivers watching their computer screens, going too slow and not paying attention because their MPG display told them to.

The flashing signal light is important to get their attention. If the other driver is texting, fiddling with the radio or otherwise distracted, the blinker may be enough to get their eyes back on task.

Just signal.

This makes me irrationally angry. The slow merging driver is actually putting EVERYONE behind him in peril with his ignorant and selfish behavior. Happened just three days ago, where I was left to wonder for a moment if I was going to get mashed by an 18-wheeler because I was stuck behind a blundering fool.

Yep. It's dangerous and inconsiderate. Someone said earlier that it's because they're afraid of accelerating on a turn, but I live in Florida where they're all pretty much straight and they still merge at 50 mph.
